23rd July 2018 – Success And Failures

It was a special evening as more than 20 guests came all the way from Thailand for the meeting. It was made all the more special conducting the meeting in an unfamiliar place (Room 5 rather than our usual place, Room 2). Nevertheless, our meeting started on time at 7.30pm with our SAA, Malik Som, warming up the crowd before the TME, Salih Jamaludin, took the stage.

The word of the day was “Liminal”. Its definition is: between or belonging to two different states, places, etc. An example of its use would be: “His career was in a liminal state of success and failure”.

The thought of the day given by the Toastmaster of the Evening was “Success and Failures are relative”. We all have different expectations for ourselves. What we see as a success, others might see as a failure. Therefore, do not let our expectations of ourselves shape the way we judge other people’s accomplishments or failures. Never say another person’s success nothing and never say their failures ‘could have been worse’.

For the Table Topics session, the theme set by the Table Topics Master was “Festivities”. In the end, Toastmaster Lai Ling Ling won the Best Table Topics Speaker ribbon. She spoke on the topic “What’s the most fun you had at a festival?” She reminisced about her childhood when she lived near the stadium where there were always festivals. She would always go there alone or with her family to enjoy the festival.

Moving on to the Prepared Speeches session, the first speaker was Hilman Omar, ACB attempting the L1P2A from the “Innovative Planning” Pathways track with a speech titled “Elaboration Likelihood Model”. Hilman introduced to us a mode of persuasion that he has learned from his time in UBD. He taught us of “Form vs Function” and how some people are easier to persuade if we focus on the “Form” which is the aesthetics while others prefer the “Function” which is the logical aspects of the idea.

The second speaker was Rahmat Tarsat, CC, ALB attempting the “Monodrama” project from the Interpretive Reading manual with a speech titled “Jenna’s Jobs”. In her speech, Rahmat took us on an emotional journey by portraying Jenna; a sensitive girl talking through her transition from becoming a house cleaner to a day care worker.

Lastly, the TME would like to thank all the roleplayers who have made this Toastmasters session a success. They are:

  • Table Topics Master: Adibah Abd Kadir, VC1
  • Table Topics Evaluator: TM Jonathan Tan
  • Grammarian: Reuben Chin, ACG, ALB
  • Ah Counter & Who Said What: Malik Som, PM1
  • Timer & Tip: TM Dalton Lim
